Nokia today announced the availability of the latest Software Development Kit (SDK) for SNAP Mobile, its end-to end solution for connected mobile gaming in Java technology. The SNAP Mobile SDK 2.2 provides developers with a number of innovative tools to make it significantly easier to create connected mobile games. New features include a game template, skinable user interface framework, support for J2SE and Bot API. The SDK is available for download through Forum Nokia at http://www.forum.nokia.com/snapmobile.


The new game template provides a complete implementation for all required community functionality such as friends list and chat, with an interface that allows developers to either plug in existing game code, or to use as a basis for entirely new connected games. This template enables developers to concentrate on developing their game, not on the platform requirements, since most SNAP Mobile requirements are already in the game template.

The SNAP Mobile SDK 2.2 also adds support for J2SE, enabling developers to design games with cross platform support. This means that SNAP Mobile games can also be created as a desktop applications or applets to run on PCs and web pages with the possibility to play against the same game’s mobile version. For example, the N-Gage title Reset Generation uses the SNAP Mobile support for J2SE to enable players to compete against each other from a webpage and from their Nokia device.

T-Mobile G1 RC29 update without over-the-air update

The Android Community has discovered the instructions on how to update the Google Android T-Mobile G1 with receiving their over the air update. All that is required is a MicroSD card which will hold the new RC29 firmware.

Before you try this however, we issue this warning…You may brick your T-Mobile G1 and lose all your data.

Firstly, download the update from Google…Rename the file to update.zip…Copy the file update.zip to the root microSD…Turn of the G1 and turn back on while pressing and holding the home key…Once you see a triangle with a exclamation sign and a phone, slide open the keyboard and press ALT-L to display the menu and then ALT-S to start the update process…Once update is complete, press Home plus Back to restart and job done.

Opera Mini Mobile Software being Rejected is False

Last week it was stated that Opera Software’s Opera Mini Browser had been rejected by Apple for the Apple iTunes App Store…(see here) However, according to some, this may not be entirely accurate…

According to further investigation into this matter done by one John Gruber, he states.

My understanding, based on information from informed sources who do not wish to be identified because they were not authorized by their employers, is that Opera has developed an iPhone version of Opera Mini - but they haven’t even submitted it to Apple, let alone had it be rejected.

John Gruber had originally presumed that Opera Software’s Opera Mini browser for the Apple iPhone has been rejected by Apple because of a built in JavaScript interpreter, but now confirms that he was incorrect on this matter.

RIM BlackBerry: Leap to Open Source?

Could Research in Motion (RIM) BlackBerry OS follow in the same steps as Google’s Android open-source and Symbian as it becomes an open-source operating system?

Although it might seem unlikely being that BlackBerry OS is proprietary for it to jump to Open-Source, but with Nokia and Symbian OS also being licensed proprietary operating systems and recently switching over it may not be ruled out. According to EE Times Senior software developer at RIM Cassidy Gentle said “We do have an open source management team that is investigating this. I would expect some of our Eclipse or Mobile Tools for Java could be made available on an open source basis, but as for our APIs or other software… that’s a pretty big leap.”

Open-Source allows developers to use the codes that are used to make applications without charging them any fee. One of the best known Open-Source operating systems for desktops is Linux and several others have emerged with many more coming in a few months.

Why BlackBerry Storm will beat iPhone 3G and G1 Phone?

We here at Phones Review would like to give you our reason why the RIM BlackBerry Storm will beat the likes of the Apple iPhone 3G and T-Mobile HTC Google Android G1 phone.

The BlackBerry Storm which is set for release on November 7th which we have been told is going to be a phone of all smartphones and could possibly beat the Apple iPhone and T-Mobile G1 Android phone hands down, below are some of the reasons why this may be possible. Personally I use the Apple iPhone 3G but will also get the Storm just to test it.

The BlackBerry Storm has been all the talk lately and with its release getting nearer we can see why the masses are getting excited, can this BlackBerry smartphone really put a dent in the market?

Well the BlackBerry Storm is coming on two major networks which are Verizon and Vodafone and it is going to be on Telus and Bell also, apparently these carriers have proven 3G networks, npw with Verizon having a whopping 70 million customers we can see them alone giving the BlackBerry Storm a very strong presence indeed. The good thing is that the Storm will have appropriate European/Asian-supported GSM bands with Verizon, Telus and Bell.

The BlackBerry App Store is said to be coming and we already know how good the Apple App store is and Google apps store is getting better, well RIM did hold a BlackBerry Developer Conference which had around 700 attendees, the BlackBerry App Store will be opening its doors March 2009 which is good news which means it will give you time to play around with the Storm smartphone and of course will give RIM the time to product quality and quantity. At the moment Google are struggling a little on the application front with around 100 apps, there are more apps via other web-based stores though. The BlackBerry App Store however will be much better in the way of purchasing applications straight from the device like that of the iPhone. Oh and there is a $150 million BlackBerry Partners Fund to back it up.

Now to the BlackBerry Storm touchscreen, the touchscreen uses springs which is the worlds first and of course has Haptic feedback technology, this means that you have to push down firmly to activate, and of course this means no accidental pressing of the icons on the screen. The BlackBerry Storm has 3 keyboard options which include SureType, QWERTY in landscape mode and Traditional 12-key in Portrait mode.

What we like is the background processing which is very much different to that of the BlackBerry Bold; well as far as we can tell anyway. I use the iPhone and must say the BlackBerry Storm is a little different in this area, for example the Storm uses true background processing of data-based applications such as running IM applications like iSkoot and Skype in the background, this is fantastic because even though the IM application is running in the background the smartphone will prompt you when a message comes in, unlike the Apple iPhone’s Google Chat which does not run in the background.

The only major downside to the BlackBerry Storm as to be the lack of Wi-Fi, but we are guessing this is because Verizon does not support UMA/GAN, personally this is pretty bad news really and RIM should have added this feature.

The Sony Ericsson marketing boffins have announced an advertising media first as Sony Ericsson teams up with Bauer Media’s lad’s magazine FHM. Yes that’s right; Sony Ericsson has teamed with FHM to create the first magazine campaign to make a mag entirely shot with a Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-Shot mobile handset.

This five figure deal between Sony Ericsson and FHM will see the Sony Ericsson C905 creative advertorials in the December 2008 issue of FHM Magazine which is on sale as of now to target the festive season shoppers.

David Hilton, Sony Ericsson UK & Ireland Marketing Director, said: “This is an amazing opportunity for us show off the capabilities of our new phone. The audience and timing of this campaign is perfect for generating a buzz within the gadget-mad young men of Britain, just as their Christmas wish lists are being created.”

Why the HTC G1 Google Android Phone is a flop

We will get the HTC G1 Google Android phone and until then we will not pass judgment personally, we are going to say what many of our readers have said so far to date.

The T-Mobile HTC G1 phone powered by the new Google Android has not been a major success like people thought it would be, the hype and build up to this smartphone was immense and all we need is true figures to prove that it has been a success.

We have already published a couple of articles that are interesting for example the one about T-Mobile fails to auto-port 3G to G1 customers (Read Here) or how about Verizon saying do not bother buying a T-Mobile G1 phone (Read here).

This G1 phone is surely falling behind and lacking that sensational hype, the hyped has fallen as they say. The Google Phone went on sale on October 22 in the U.S and October 31 in the UK and already people are complaining of its flaws.

The first flaw is the fact that when the screen has been pushed up to reveal the QWERTY keypad it is a little difficult to hold the phone and type because of the bulky bottom which will obviously be located on the right hand side whilst typing, many customers have said that the bottom of the phone is in the way when typing.

Some say the phone is too clunky and cheap when handling, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack and the worst bit is when taking a call the chunky bottom hits your chin. Please let us know what you think of the HTC G1 Google Android Phone?

Omnia’s brother Samsung T*OMNIA is bigger and improved

Looks like Samsung Korea has a new mobile phone out, the Samsung OMNIA’s brother no less known as the Samsung T*OMNIA, both Samsung phones are quite similar, although this new T*OMNIA does have four improved features.

The four improved features of the Samsung T*OMNIA are…3.3 display rather than the Omnia’s 3.22…the resolution is higher at 480 x 800 rather than the Omnia’s 240 x 400…the addition of a DMB TV Tuner…lastly the T*OMNIA id larger in size at 115.2 x 58.1 x 13.65.

What is interesting though it that the Samsung T*OMNIA uses the same digital TV tuner and screen size as the Japanese Samsung Omnia 930SC
